I grew up in a musical family in Toronto. My two older sisters studied piano and at age four I also requested lessons. My sisters and I performed 3-part harmony on demand and I imagined my future as part of a musical sisters act. Though they sadly lost interest, singing and songs remained a passion. Raised on Broadway show tunes, I was ripe for the the rock, folk and British Invasion of the 60’s . Toronto was home to the coffeehouse scene that nurtured great Canadian songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot. By fifteen I picked up guitar and started writing both poems and songs. University took me to Manchester where I studied Drama, before completing an English degree at the University of Toronto. In both places I provided music for theatrical productions. Later as a CBC radio freelancer I furthered my interest in songwriting with a feature on Harold Arlen, composer of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and other hit songs still sung today. Meeting the elderly composer and his peers and collaborators, I came to understand more about the songwriter’s craft. I’m drawn to many forms of music and write and perform numerous styles including pop, folk, jazz and devotional music. In Victoria, BC where I live with poet-publisher Richard Olafson, I lead and perform with Trio Espresso a versatile ensemble tackling many genres.
